Wardell Gray (February 13, 1921 – May 25, 1955) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist who straddled the swing and bebop periods. Biography. Early years. The youngest of four children, Gray was born in Oklahoma City. He spent his early childhood years in Oklahoma before he and his family moved to Detroit, Michigan [1] in 1929.

Wardell Gray played with nearly every major figure in jazz history, and his discography is a wonder to digest. Unfortunately, much of his recorded legacy remains unissued or out of print – which is particularly astonishing considering the quality of this body of work.
