She was adopted by American Eugene Leigh and his English wife, and they soon moved to France where Leigh was a racehorse trainer in the Maison Lafette stables near Paris.
Vera Leigh was an agent for the UK's Special Operations Executive during World War II. She was a member of the Donkeyman and Inventor sub-circuits in occupied France until she was arrested by the Gestapo and executed at the Natzweiler-Struthof concentration camp.
