It marked not only his turn to a modern sound and use of synthesizers (particularly on the opening track), but also, after the harmonies and backing vocals from Jennifer Warnes on the previous Recent Songs (1979), an even greater contribution from Warnes, who is credited equally to Cohen as vocalist on all of the tracks.
At the time, the album brought back New Skin from the Old Ceremony producer John Lissauer to the Cohen fold, and together—with Jennifer Warnes billed as a co-vocalist on the tracks—the trio went about assembling a “modern” Leonard Cohen album that embraced the current sounds of synthesizers and stronger backbeats.
She toured Europe with Cohen's band in 1972 and 1979 — first as a back-up singer and then as a vocal arranger and guest singer on Cohen's albums Live Songs (1973), Recent Songs (1979), Various Positions (1985), I'm Your Man (1988), The Future (1992), Field Commander Cohen: Tour of 1979 (2001), and Old Ideas (2012).
