Uppingham, founded in 1584, was the first English school to open a gymnasium (1860) and to appoint a Director of Music (1865). Girls were first admitted in 1975. Alumni include Academy Award winning film director John Schlesinger; comedian, actor, writer and presenter Stephen Fry; and Harry Judd, drummer from the pop band McFly.
Facilities are impressive at the Uppingham School Sports Centre, which houses a six-lane 25m swimming pool, a 62-station fitness studio, three squash courts, a gymnasium, two dance studios, and six-court sports hall; there are also 12 tennis courts. Academic results. Uppingham performs highly in both A Level and GCSE results.
