Desde 1992, recibe este nombre en honor al empresario y filántropo de siglo XIX John Moores aunque anteriormente se llamó Liverpool Mechanics' School of Arts y Liverpool Polytechnic.

Liverpool John Moores University (abbreviated LJMU) is a public research university in the city of Liverpool, England. The university can trace its origins to the Liverpool Mechanics' School of Arts, established in 1823. This later merged to become Liverpool Polytechnic.
Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) can trace its roots back to 1823 and the foundation of Liverpool Mechanics’ and Apprentices’ Library. We’ve come a long way since then, becoming a university in 1992 and we are now ranked 60th in The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2018.
