U Thant was the second Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1961 to 1971, chosen to fill the vacancy after Dag Hammarskjold's death. He was a former journalist, educator and diplomat from Burma who served on various occasions as an adviser to Prime Ministers of Burma. He received honorary degrees from several universities and was a Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
