For those of you who don’t know who she is, Lee Ellen Schumacher composes ambient music inside various hollow spaces. Once, she composed in a large concrete column. She has done work in long tunnels from all over the place, and she uses various types of instrumentals along with her voice to conduct beautiful music.

However, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Janis’s first band, is on this list because some of their guitar work contained psychedelic overtones. The Beatniks are named after the track ‘Beatnik’ by OG Dunedin Sound band The Clean, which itself makes reference to the Beat Generation subculture of the 60s. Although what The Beatniks do is different to what happened in the 60s, they’re part of a subculture of their own: the Dunedin sound and student scene.
