Tom Petty, nome artístico de Thomas Earl Petty ( Gainesville, 20 de outubro de 1950 – Los Angeles, 2 de outubro de 2017) foi um compositor e cantor estadunidense de rock. Iniciou na banda The Epics ( Mudcrutch) e, foi fundador e vocalista da banda Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Também foi integrante do supergrupo Traveling Wilburys.
Tom Petty új társai Campbell és Tench mellett Ron Blair (basszus) és Stan Lynch (dob) lettek, The Heartbreakers néven. Első lemezük, az 1976-os Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Amerikában viszonylag még csak mérsékelt sikert ért el, Nagy-Britanniában azonban sikerült feltűnést kelteni (élőben is) a hetvenes évek új hullámához illeszkedve.
