Pigpen played upright piano briefly during the Dead’s 1970 acoustic sets, but other than that used the Hammond exclusively until his departure from the band in 1972.

19 de jul. de 2022 · Keyboardist Tom Constanten left the group at the start of 1970, so a position needed to be filled. Godchaux wasn’t a replacement for Pigpen. Instead, Godchaux’s intense dedication to the acoustic piano allowed Pig to keep playing the organ without cluttering up the sonic space.
