LAUSD first conceived the idea of opening a high school between 4th and 6th Street in 1921 and chose to name it after the 26th U.S. president, Theodore Roosevelt. The schools team name, the Rough Riders, is the nickname of the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, which Roosevelt was a part of during the Spanish-American War.
