When he died of a heart attack on May 17, 1996, onstage at the Blues Cafe in Yokohama, Japan, Watson was 61, his musical heroism intact. "John will be remembered," said Herb Alpert, who first worked with him back in 1 957 and thought he was a genius. "The man found a little funk in everything."
