Otis Redding Jr. was born September 9, 1941, the son of a part- time Baptist preacher in Dawson, Georgia. When Otis was three, the family moved to Macon, where he sang regularly in church choirs along with other members of his family. By the time Redding reached 10th grade, Otis Sr. had become increasingly ill with tuberculosis.
