The original Stray Gators, backing band for a pair of Neil Young classics, Harvest and Time Fades Away, are all dead. Jack Nitzsche was the first to go, on August 25, 2000. Nitzsche was a composer, producer, and arranger before he was a musician, but his piano and slide guitar were key components to the Stray Gators’ keening, roots-rock sound.
Notes. Volume 4 of the Neil Young Archives Performance Series is a recording of a concert Neil Young played with The Stray Gators at the University Of Alabama in Tuscaloosa on February 5th, 1973. It was released worldwide on June 7th, 2019 on a single CD and a three-sided vinyl album with etched artwork on side four.
