Salton Sea Access The Salton Basin is bordered by the Coachella Valley in the north and the larger, flatter Imperial Valley to the south. Main roads run along both the east and west shores (see map), with the eastern route (CA 111) generally closer to the water; the west highway (CA 86) is several miles away.The lake looks similar from all directions and there is no particular center for visitors.
The Salton Sea was formed between 1905 and 1907 when the Colorado River burst through poorly built irrigation controls south of Yuma, Arizona. Almost the entire flow of the river filled the Salton Basin for more than a year, inundating communities, farms and the main line of the Southern Pacific Railroad.
The Salton Sea State Recreation Area has hundreds of day use sites, a boat ramp and wash area, trails, a visitor center (open during peak season), a play area for the kids, and fishing jettys. During the season, Rangers offer guided tours in the park's interpretive boat to view the birds for which the Recreation Area is famous.
The salton sea is a beautiful place to see, it’s. still a great place to see and enjoy. The state park says you can go Hiking trails, and shoreline access are available for recreational use. Biking, hiking, kayaking, wading, and wildlife watching are also permitted. Access to Picnic tables.
