He is an actor and composer, known for Sing Street (2016), Daddy's Home 2 (2017) and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (2015). He has been married to Sheridan Forbes since 15 July 2003. They have three children. He was previously married to Annabel Giles.

È noto per essere stato il chitarrista dei Visage dal 1978 al 1980 ed il chitarrista e cantante degli Ultravox dal 1980 al 1987 e dal 2009 in poi. Il nome d'arte Midge non è altro che "Jim" letto al contrario (Mij) e trasposto foneticamente.
