The Ninth Gate is a 1999 neo-noir horror thriller film directed, produced, and co-written by Roman Polanski. An international co-production between the United States, Portugal, France, and Spain, the film is loosely based upon Arturo Pérez-Reverte's 1993 novel The Club Dumas.

The ending reveals that the Girl, a mysterious character who accompanies him, is the only one who can help him find the correct engravings for the ritual. She also reveals that the Devil is real and that he is the Girl's father.
A rare book dealer is hired to verify the authenticity of a 17th century occult text that may summon the Devil. He travels to Europe to compare the book with other copies, but encounters danger and mystery along the way.
