The Mekons. British rock band, formed in 1977 in Leeds, West Yorkshire. In the mid-1980s they changed their style to folk/folk rock. The band's name was derived from the Mekon, the villainous Venusian from the British comic strip Dan Dare.

Mekons archeology yields a 1978 demo, Where Were You, and the 1981 rockabilly East Is Red. Best of the bunch are the Captain Beefheart's distorted punk-blues Polaroid and the 1987 B-side 1967 Revisited (Cooking Vinyl), haflway between spaghetti-western instrumental and synth-pop balladry.
