The Manish Boys originally started in 1962 as Band Seven, in Maidstone, Kent. After several personnel changes, they ended up as a six-piece group, and changed their music from pop covers to R'n'B. The Manish Boys' (at that time featuring David Bowie) version was released in 1965. The recording was produced by Shel Talmy, who was also producing the early singles and albums by the Who and the Kinks. Jimmy Page was Talmy's regular session musician and he played the guitar solo on "I Pity the Fool".

Bowie formed his first band, the Konrads, in 1962 at the age of 15 under his birth name David Jones. Konrads playing guitar-based rock and roll at local youth gatherings and weddings, the Konrads had a varying line-up of between four and eight members. Bowie's childhood friend, George Underwood among them, as well as drummer Dave Crook and guitarist Neville Wills.
