Synopsis. Set in World War II England, The Lover is a novel based on the real-life case of serial killer Gordon Cummins, also known as the Blackout Ripper. [1] [2] A 28-year-old British airman, Cummins began strangling and mutilating female prostitutes in London during the bombing and subsequent blackout in the city.

Laura Wilson creates an authentic, atmospheric rendering of WWII London, and its denizens struggling to survive it through the brutal events.
A creepy and excellent psychological sketch of two women and a man who is going to kill one of them. My review concludes "This is not anything like the usual serial killer story in which good and evil are locked in struggle, with women's bodies used to keep score.
