In the 1920's and 30's, Barnes was Hollywood's top woman stunt pilot. In the 1940's and 50's, she owned and operated the (in)famous "Happy Bottom Riding Club" - a fly-in resort located near Edwards Air Force Base.

I don’t know if they still hold that today, the new base commander was not amiable to tourists, but back then it was a fun event — great barbecued tri-tip and all the fixin’s.

She was a very tough cookie, and took no lip from young pilots. Her bar, Pancho's Happy Bottom Riding Club, burnt down during the Mercury Program, supposedly from an errant flare. It was the bar where all the test pilots went to drink.
