Rock and roll (often written as rock & roll, rock-n-roll, rock 'n' roll, rock n' roll or Rock n' Roll) is a genre of popular music that evolved in the United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s.
The term rock ‘n’ roll has been traced back as far as the 1920s in Black music, when Trixie Smith recorded “My Baby Rocks Me with One Steady Roll” in 1922. It became the accepted label for this developing genre when in 1951, Cleveland disc jockey Alan Freed began calling his rhythm and blues radio show “Moondog’s Rock and Roll Party.”
The origins of rock and roll are complex. Rock and roll emerged as a defined musical style in the United States in the early to mid-1950s. It derived most directly from the rhythm and blues music of the 1940s, [1] which itself developed from earlier blues, the beat-heavy jump blues, boogie woogie, up-tempo jazz, and swing music.
