The wolf-infested forests is a dangerous area for any traveller, the reason being that wolves are smart and take advantage of the environment so that the thoughtless get lured out of path and lost.
Essentially a coming-of-age story, The Company of Wolves is based on two short stories from Angela Carter's 1979 collection The Bloody Chamber.The film is a dark retelling of the classic fairytale Little Red Riding Hood, making explicit its sexual and Freudian subtext. The original story (a morality fable, like all fairytales) warns children not to trust strangers or stray from the path.
