The Chuck Wagon Gang is a Country gospel musical group, formed in 1935 by David P. ("Dad") Carter, oldest son Ernest ("Jim") along with daughters Lola ("Rose") and Effie ("Anna"). The group got their first radio break as sponsored singers for Bewley Flour in 1936.
Current owner, manager, and alto singer Shaye Smith is the granddaughter of original alto Anna (“Effie”) Carter and of Howard Gordon, who played deft and discreet electric and acoustic guitar for the Chuck Wagon Gang in the 1950s and ‘60s.. In today’s Chuck Wagon Gang, Smith is joined by long-time soprano Melissa Kemper, tenor Josh Garner, and guitarist Darrell Morris.

Melissa Kemper. Soprano Melissa Kemper is a native of Groveton, TX, and she still resides there today, with her husband, Jamie, and children Weston, Brandon, and Alysse. Melissa sang soprano with the Chuck Wagon Gang between 2001 and 2006, then left the group to be with her children during their formative years. She re-joined the quartet in 2015.
