The Catherine Wheel is an album by Scottish-American musician David Byrne, released in 1981 by Sire Records. It contains Byrne's musical score for choreographer Twyla Tharp 's dance project of the same name. [3] [4] The Catherine Wheel premiered September 22, 1981, at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City .
He played on keyboard player/guitarist Jerry Harrison's debut album, The Red and the Black, and on several tracks on David Byrne's soundtrack to the Twyla Tharp dance piece, The Catherine Wheel (with his guitar noises credited, amongst other things, as "beasts").
The Catherine Wheel takes its title from a torture device used in the martyrdom of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. This device has lent its name to a number of familiar things over time - a spinning firework, a crochet pattern, a flower.

Twyla Tharpe even drops in doing water pot. This is, of course, a score for a Broadway dance piece. If you take it for only it's musical value, there's a lot here to like.
The Catherine Wheel III is a tour-friendly redaction of the original Broadway production. The set is more compact and the cast slightly smaller. Tharp condensed the original seventeen sections to fourteen and reduced the plot to its essential elements.
