  1. History of the University. Authorized by the Texas Legislature in 1899, Southwest Texas State Normal School opened its doors in 1903. During the first century, the Legislature retained the regional designation in the name, but as its mission changed it became first Normal College, then successively Teachers College, College and University.

The full-time teaching staff increased from 94 in 1950 to 275 in 1967 and 400 in 1971. The physical plant was greatly enlarged, with plant investment expanding to $15,418,438 in 1965.
