Twee jaar later organiseerde Serge Koussevitzky er tijdens de zomer een opleiding voor ongeveer 300 jonge musici, inmiddels bekend als het Tanglewood Music Center (en voorheen als het Berkshire Music Center). Het Boston Symphony Orchestra heeft er sindsdien elke zomer, behalve in de jaren 1942-45, opgetreden in de Koussevitzky Music Shed.
Age Requirements. All applicants to the Tanglewood Music Center (TMC) must have completed their secondary school (high school) education. It is expected that applicants to the TMC will have advanced musical skills, and therefore most successful applicants will have completed or nearly completed their undergraduate education.
Housing. Most Tanglewood Music Center (TMC) Fellows reside in the dormitory of Miss Hall's School in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, located seven miles from the Tanglewood grounds. A bus runs regularly between the two locations, although Fellows are strongly encouraged to bring a car, both for their own daily transportation and to explore the many attractions in the Berkshires.

Leipzig Alliance. As a part of the Boston Symphony Orchestra's alliance with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Fellows from the Tanglewood Music Center participate in an exchange each spring that brings TMC Fellows to Leipzig for performances with the orchestra of the Mendelssohn Orchestra Academy.In select years this includes vocal alumni performing works for voice and orchestra.
