Background. The tune had originally been called "Scotch on the Rocks", but foreseeing problems with teen audiences, Golden Crest Records changed it to "Tall Cool One". [1] [2] Chart performance. A moderate success in 1959, the song was re-released in 1964 and entered the Top 100 a second time, charting as well as the first time around at 38.

He liked the track and had it re-recorded by the band in Lakewood in February 1959; its title "Tall Cool One" was apparently suggested by Morrill's mother. Released as a single, it reached # 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 and # 24 on the R&B chart.
