The album was a commercial success, topping the US charts for 15 weeks and reaching number three in the UK.

By late 1967, Barrett's deteriorating mental health and increasingly erratic behaviour rendered him "unable or unwilling" to continue in his capacity as Pink Floyd's songwriter and lead guitarist.
