Syd Barrett zmarł 7 lipca 2006 w swoim domu w Cambridge w wieku 60 lat. Przyczyną śmierci były komplikacje związane z cukrzycą i rakiem trzustki. Jego zwłoki zostały skremowane, a prochy prawdopodobnie przekazane siostrze i najbliższej rodzinie. Grobu Syda nie ma na cmentarzu w Cambridge.
