Double Up is Mase’s most introspective offering from his musical catalog, as he shares the positive and negative results of conquering the hip-hop world in roughly an 18-month time period. His first album stands as a classic, and the follow-up would have been a game changer if Mase stuck around to tell its story.
Mase stated that Michael Jackson's death influenced him to make a comeback. He appeared on Power 105.1 to discuss his comeback with "The Prince of New York" DJ Self. Mase used that radio show as his outlet to release new music throughout the rest of the summer, with a new song or feature premiere every Friday on DJ Self's show.
Mase is a prodigy of Puffy's (of course) and this album reeks of his touch. Sampling that is less beat chemistry then it is pure swiping of catchy RnB hooks, and songs that feel like more chorus then they do verse. Mase himself has one of the most stupidly bad flows in all of rap, dude sounds like he's half-asleep, no emotion or energy at all.
