Strindberg y Siri iniciaron una relación platónica y en 1877, tras el divorcio de la pareja Wrangel, se casaron. En 1879, con la publicación de su novela El cuarto rojo, se consagró como escritor y se le adscribió al movimiento de renovación sueco. En 1882 estrenó su drama Maestro Olof.
