Richard Strauss in 1910. Der Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Rose or The Rose-Bearer), Op. 59, is a comic opera in three acts by Richard Strauss to an original German libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. It is loosely adapted from Louvet de Couvrai's novel Les amours du chevalier de Faublas and Molière's comedy Monsieur de Pourceaugnac.

Program notes. The Knight of the Rose, or Der Rosenkavalier, is probably the best known and best loved opera by Richard Strauss, a crowd-pleasing success from the moment of its premiere in 1911. Qualified by the composer himself as a “Mozartean opera,” it arguably represents the high water mark of Strauss's creative output.
