Steven Seagal es hijo de una enfermera y de un profesor, nació en Michigan pero creció en California. Tras iniciarse en las artes marciales desde su niñez, Seagal se trasladó a finales de los años 60 a Japón, en donde impartió clases de inglés para pagar sus estudios en Aikido, Kendo, Budismo y Zen.
