Melvin M. Ragin (December 8, 1950 – October 24, 2018), known professionally as " Wah Wah Watson ," was an American guitarist who was a member of the Funk Brothers, the studio band for Motown Records. He also worked extensively as a session musician in a variety of genres from jazz and pop to R&B .

Melvin "Wah Wah" Watson. American soul/funk guitarist, songwriter and producer. He worked as a top session musician for artists such as Michael Jackson ( Off The Wall ), Marvin Gaye ( Let's Get It On ), Herbie Hancock ( Man-Child ), and Quincy Jones ( Body Heat ), among others.

Even before the vocal enters he has used the “whacka-whacka” of his Cry Baby to turn the rhythm around multiple times, add crackling punctuations, and create crescendos that sound like a piece of sheet metal being shaken.
A behind-the-scenes pioneer of the '70s soul/funk, Watson was a key player in the era's Motown Sound and has contributed guitar and/or writing and production to literally hundreds of singles and albums between then and now.
