Sonny Terry. More images. Real Name: Saunders Terrell. Profile: Blind American blues harmonica player and vocalist. He primarily played in the Piedmont blues style but also appeared in numerous folk music collaborations with the likes of Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. He is most known for performing as a duo with guitarist Brownie McGhee .
In 1934 Sonny teamed with Blind Boy Fuller, and the two performed on street corners around Durham, N.C. with the Rev. Gary Davis. Sonny and Fuller recorded together until Fuller's death in 1940. It was around the time of Fuller's death that Terry performed at the "Spirituals to Swing" concert series at Carnegie Hall.
Terry and McGhee became a popular duo during the folk revival movement of the ‘50s and ‘60s, and most of Terry's recordings, including BLUES WITH BIG BILL BROONZY, SONNY TERRY AND BROWNIE MCGHEE (’59), and SONNY & BROWNIE (’73), are from this period. Terry was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1986, and he died the same year.
