Soft Machine es un grupo musical británico de rock formado en 1966, que junto a Caravan definió el llamado «sonido Canterbury». Durante su inestable e intensa carrera (con más de 15 miembros en poco más de una década) pasaron por la psicodelia y el rock progresivo para finalmente desembocar en el Jazz fusion , siendo pioneros en los tres géneros.
Soft Machine are a British rock band from Canterbury formed in mid-1966 by Mike Ratledge, Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, Daevid Allen and Larry Nowlin. As a central band of the Canterbury scene, the group became one of the first British psychedelic acts and later moved into progressive and jazz rock, becoming a purely instrumental band in 1971. [2]

Soft Machine (billed as The Soft Machine up to 1969 or 1970) were formed in mid-1966 by Robert Wyatt (drums, vocals), Kevin Ayers (bass, guitar, vocals), Daevid Allen (guitar) and Mike Ratledge (organ). Allen, Wyatt and future bassist Hugh Hopper had first played together in the Daevid Allen Trio in 1963, occasionally accompanied by Ratledge.
