Vai was in his mid-20s when he joined Roth's first solo band, alongside bassist Billy Sheehan and drummer Gregg Bissonette.The unit worked together on Roth's first two solo albums, Eat 'Em and Smile and Skyscraper.
“It was a completely different album” Billy stated. With the addition of synthesizers he wasn’t impressed or proud of Skyscraper. Billy was offered the role to join Paul Gilbert’s band Mr Big and accepted. Whereas with Steve Vai, I’m uncertain as to why he left though it could’ve been to pursue other projects.
