James has a lovely voice, atypical of the gruff and rough blues voices popular at the time (e.g Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters), his sound and voice on this record mix the simple, raw acoustic delta blues of Robert Johnson's time with the more eclectic chicago blues of the same day (in all but instrumentation).
