26 de ago. de 2011 · No. 2 is one of my very favorite performances--and this is Sibelius's most oft-recorded symphony! Abravanel gives it the old-fashioned Romantic treatment, with moderate tempos that never feel rushed. The finale is a sheer triumphant joy that builds to a rousing climax.

Sibelius: Symphonies 1-4/Abravanel. David Hurwitz. Artistic Quality: 8. Sound Quality: 9. These performances have a lot to recommend them. Maurice Abravanel’s Sibelius always offers shapely, intelligent interpretations–and in some cases much more than that.
Abravanel is all inky nocturnal melodrama in the finale. Abravanel and the Utah players undoubtedly hit just the right note in Numbers 3 (prone to hymnlike pacing in the last movement), 5 and 6. He is wakeful, open to the sudden sway and lilt of the music and applies pointful accenting. All these are strong performances.
