In 1979, Falco put together the first version of his band the Panther Burns (named for a famous Tennessee plantation), a group whose revolving membership included Alex Chilton and James Luther Dickinson in its early incarnations.
Tav Falco joined Jim Dickinson's eccentric band Mud Boy & The Neutrons as a performance artist where they would play at Memphis’ Orpheum Theater. When Mud Boy disbanded Tav continued to perform at the Orpheum where in 1978 Alex Chilton would see him chain-sawing a guitar in a performance. Alex was so excited about Tav's act the two would go on to form The Panther Burns along with Jim Dickinson.
