About Human Trafficking. Human trafficking, also called trafficking in persons, has no place in our world. As both a grave crime and a human rights abuse, it compromises national and economic security, undermines the rule of law, and harms the well-being of individuals and communities everywhere. It is a crime of exploitation.
Myth: It’s always or usually a violent crime. Myth: All human trafficking involves commercial sex. Myth: Only undocumented foreign nationals get trafficked in the United States. Myth: Human trafficking only happens in illegal or underground industries. Myth: Only women and girls can be victims and survivors of sex trafficking.
The 2020 Trafficking in Persons Report marked the first time the U.S. Department of State applied this new provision, finding 12 governments had a “policy or pattern” of trafficking, including: Afghanistan, Belarus, Burma, China, Cuba, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Russia, South Sudan, Syria, and Turkmenistan.
