Adkins raakte op zijn tiende levensjaar geïnteresseerd in martial arts, toen hij met zijn vader en broer een lokale judovereniging bezocht.Zijn interesse in de vechtkunst groeide nog meer toen hij op zijn veertiende Bruce Lee als idool aannam.
