Just rewatched Saw III for the first time in years! I also just learned that it was originally made to be the last Saw film. It was made with the idea to tie up Amanda and John's stories together. Watching the film with this information, especially when it comes out at the end that this was Amanda's test, I get it now.

There’s only so much that can be done in this time period, but this gives his actions in Saw III - desperate surgery - more context.

Saw II set up Amanda as the accomplice to Jigsaw and by the end we had a badass accomplice and a strong female lead for future movies. Then Saw III rolls around and the writers were just like "Nah" and then they make her a whiny bitch and shoot her in the neck and move forward with a man as the new accomplice.
