Cuando consiguió editor, este le quitó cuarenta mil palabras y puso el título Sartoris.Por fin, en 1973, después de la muerte del autor y más con fines comerciales que otra cosa, se publicó la versión completa con el título elegido por Faulkner: Banderas en el polvo (Flags in the Dust).
Sartoris is the work in which Faulkner for the first time not only discovered and explored the imaginative world that features in nearly all his works, but also found his unique way of depicting it. Thus although it is not yet the work of a mature writer, it undoubtedly bears the mark of his growing assurance and skill.
