Alas, it is not an isolated case: many institutions of higher learning, especially art schools, with fewer than a thousand students have been under financial strain for a number of years.

The San Francisco Art Institute at 800 Chestnut St. (1961-2022). In 1871 the San Francisco Art Association (SFAA) was founded by local artists and supporters to promote art in the city. In 1874 the SFAA founded the California School of Design (CSD) and began offering classes. This was SFAI in its earliest incarnation.
The San Francisco Art Institute is the first fine arts college west of the Mississippi, and for nearly 150 years it has been an incubator for innovative, sometimes subversive, artwork and artists. Dorothea Lange, Sargent Johnson, Joan Brown, and other luminaries all found a place there.
