In 1895, this tall, skinny, virtually penniless 16-year-old, the firstborn son of Hasidic Jews, walked out of Warsaw 300 miles to the Oder River, crossed and then hiked another 200 miles to Hamburg, where a kindly glovemaker named Liebglid raised the 18 shillings required to put him on the boat train to London.
