  7. Irvine was born in Paisley in 1938, the son of a Professional Artist John Russell. He initially took up singing as a part time profession and sang regularly with Scottish Opera Chorus. Irvine converted to painting after a short period of study at Glasgow School of Art and developed as a part time professional over many years.
