Roscoe Mitchell is a saxophonist, composer, educator and NEA Jazz Master. He is considered one of the key figures in avant-garde jazz, integrating influences from world music, funk, rock and classical. He has been involved with the AACM, a Chicago-based nonprofit organization for new creative music, and has performed on more than 85 recordings and written in excess of 250 compositions.

Roscoe Mitchell Jr. was born August 3, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Roscoe Mitchell Sr. and Ida Carter. The family lived on the corner of 60th and State Street, near Washington Park, which at the time was an epicenter of black cultural activity for the Bronzeville neighborhood in Chicago’s South Side.
