Because Artaud situated the ‘soul’ and the creative or philosophical impulses it implies at the level of matter, Ros Murray keeps the focus throughout her book on his attachment to the physicality of the material object, ‘which is treated as if it were scum to be scratched at, scraped away and disregarded’ (p. 8).
