Ronald Charles McKernan (September 8, 1945 – March 8, 1973), known as Pigpen, was an American musician. He was a founding member of the San Francisco band the Grateful Dead and played in the group from 1965 to 1972.

Jerry Garcia might have become their de facto leader in everything but name, but without Pigpen’s insistence on creating a group, the world’s most beloved jam band would not exist.
JESSE: Ron “Pigpen” McKernan died 50 years ago this month at the age of 27. He’s buried at the Alta Mesa Memorial Park in Palo Alto, the town where the Grateful Dead were born. An inscription reads, “Pigpen was and is now forever one of the Grateful Dead.”
